Hello! My name is Kate Vogel. I am taking this class because I want to learn how to write a college level essay. Although I did well in my high school writing classes, I feel like the style of writing will be much more demanding in college. I am a stickler for five paragraph essays. That can be considered a strength and a weakness of mine. I can organize my papers, but as touched upon by Hjortshoj, my essays wouldn’t “go” anywhere. I also have a very difficult time at being concise! Oh well, I guess that’s what we are here for, right? I’m looking forward to learning how to write more thoughtful, structured papers.
I connected with Hjortshoj’s paper. I feel as if the only way I know how to write an essay is by using the five paragraph form. Never before have I realized how restricting that is. When I read that the problem with five paragraph essays was that “[they] didn’t go anywhere” (Hjortshoj, 42) it was an eye-opener. Papers are supposed to give meaning to the subject that you are writing about, and take you further than your introduction did. The structure of the five paragraph essay has vehemently sucked my ability to write thoughtful papers away from me.
I felt uncomfortable in AP English. When I added personality to my papers I was chastised, which I took personally. So instead of writing the way I thought I should, I reverted back into my safety net, my footstool, and I always wrote plain-jane five paragraph essays. Maybe I should look at writing in a different way. I do not need to follow the five paragraph structure. As we read from Hjortshoj and Lopez sometimes it is better to “proceed almost by accident” (Lopez, 1), because you never know where a different train of thought might take you.
